Frequently Asked Questions

With so many wood flooring options available, how does one choose?

The application of the flooring is the first element to consider. What rooms are being installed? Is the flooring being installed above grade or below grade? Is there in-floor heat? Will the floor be nailed down, glued down or floated? Will the hardness of the species be a factor in the selection of the wood?

Once the above questions have been answered, aesthetics are considered -- what do you want your floor to look like? This decision revolves around the following four elements: species of wood, grade of wood, width of flooring and type of finish. Some current trends in wood flooring are wider plank floors, darker wood species and dark stains. Lower grade woods are also popular along with distressed and hand-scraped flooring. Eco-conscious consumers are interested in “green” products such as sustainably harvested woods, cork and bamboo.

It is important to talk with a knowledgeable flooring professional to guide you through this decision-making process.

How much does it cost to install wood flooring?

The price for wood flooring varies depending on the species of wood installed, the grade of the species, the width of the flooring and the finish used. A reasonable ball-park range to use for budgeting purposes is $8 to $10 per square foot for product and installation.

My home does not currently have wood flooring. Can it be added? What does this process involve?

Wood flooring can be added to just about any room in an existing home. The first step is an in-home inspection to determine what installation method would be required and to take measurements. After a decision has been made regarding the type of flooring, a free estimate is provided. Prior to commencing the work we require a contract agreement and a down payment. Once this is received, your job is scheduled.

I already have wood flooring in my home but I think it needs to be refinished. What does this process involve?

There are two options for refurbishing an existing floor:

Recoating. Surface scratches can often be addressed with a recoat. This process involves lightly abrading the surface of the existing polyurethane finish and applying another finish coat. Typically floors are recoated every two to ten years, depending on maintenance and lifestyle.

Refinishing. If the scratches in your flooring are deep or if there are dents, visible wear patterns or cupping, a full refinishing is probably necessary. Depending on your lifestyle and the type of flooring in your home, refinishing is done about every 10 to 15 years. This process involves completely sanding down the flooring to the bare wood and applying new finish coats. If you would like to change the color of your floor, this is a perfect time to do so by applying a stain in the finishing process.

To help you determine which option is necessary for your wood flooring, a home inspection is recommended, after which a free estimate is provided. Upon acceptance of the estimate and receipt of a down payment, your job is scheduled.

How do I take care of my wood floor?

Wood flooring is easy to care for. The introduction of polyurethane finishes to the wood flooring industry has eliminated the need for routine buffing and waxing. It is important to keep grit off the floor by vacuuming or sweeping and to always clean with a product intended for cleaning polyurethane finishes.
